Thika Regional Library Project, 2007-2009
Fundraising for this project is now completed!!!
Location and facility: The first Thika Regional Library is in Thika town and will be a two story facility with rooms for classes and meetings. It will serve as a community gathering place as well as library in an area of 900,000 people with numerous schools and colleges that have no comprehensive library facilities.
Land and Construction: The land on which the library stands is owned by one of our partners, the African Christian Church and Schools. The construction is done by experienced builders and there is an architectural firm and a project manager working with Rev. Karanja of the ACC&S.
Costs: The cost of the completed library is about $100,000. AFK and Literacy Leads to Hope have contributed about $50,000 of those (including a Grant of $30,000 by the Gloria Dei Foundation) and the rest came form a church in Canada.
Timeline: Building started in 2007 and should be completed by Summer of 2009, when our teams will be there for the inauguration celebrations.
The Impact and Benefits of this Library: This will not be any ordinary library.
The Thika library will serve as an "education center" for people who are impoverished, in poor health or HIV positive, or living in the rural communbity of Thika so they can learn about how to improve their situation and empower them with knowledge for their future.
This library will serve close to one million people who otherwise would never have access to a place to gather and resolve community conflicts. It will be a place to learn, to read or simply a place to find materials that could encourage imagination and plant the seed of hope.
Fundraising Initiatives: Megan Adams and Danielle Rodriguez, two wonderful high school young women from Tampa, volunteered to help in this initiative and raise funds for us. They worked very hard, along with their mother's support, organizing fundraising activities and events. Please visit Megan and Danielle's website www.literacyleadstohope.org.
